Simms Taback's Great Big Book of Spacey, Snakey, Buggy Riddles

Hall, Katy and Lisa Eisenberg. 2008. SIMMS TABACK’S GREAT BIG BOOK OF SPACEY, SNAKEY, BUGGY RIDDLES. Ill. by Simms Taback. New York: Viking. ISBN 9780670011216 [Suggested Grade Levels 1-6]

REVIEW
What child doesn’t love a good riddle and what librarian can ever have enough riddle and joke books? Chock full of laughable and groanable riddles such as “What do bugs have that no other animals have? Baby buggies,” this Caldecott award-winner Simms Taback illustrated collection is a definite kid pleaser. Eisenberg and Hall have written nineteen riddle books and have a fine grasp on what children really like.

And, oh, by the way, “What do bugs use Cheerios for?” Bet you don’t know. It’s “hula hoops.”

CONNECTIONS
Find a number of riddle books and have a “riddle bee” in the format of a “spelling bee.” Ask riddles and if the child gets it correct, they remain standing and the last one standing wins. Or make it a team competition where the team with the most points wins. Have children make up their own riddles or have students choose a favorite riddle to illustrate and make a class book of riddles.
