Flawed Dogs: The Novel: The Shocking Raid on Westminster

Breathed, Berkeley. 2009. FLAWED DOGS: THE NOVEL: THE SHOCKING RAID ON WESTMINSTER. New York: Philomel. ISBN 9780399252181 [Suggested Grade Levels 5 & up]

REVIEW

Berkeley Breathed’s first novel is a touching tale of unconditional love and the heartache that sometimes goes along with it. Sam the Lion is a dachshund who is meant to be a show dog, but a series of tragic events changes the course of his life. Heidy was en route to her uncle’s home to start a new life while Sam is in a small cage on his way to being a show dog. Through a series of comical mishaps at the airport, Sam is free and chooses to be with Heidy. Heidy has always said she hated dogs, but has a soft spot for Sam. Unfortunately, she is Sam’s owner for only a short period of time, but no matter how bad things get, Sam is always thinking of Heidy and how he can protect her. The subjects covered can be tragic. Sensitive readers may struggle with some of the events that take place, but a sad and painful beginning makes way for a happy ending.

Berkeley Breathed’s signature illustrations bring the story to life and give a comical element to the characters.
