Higher! Higher!

Patricelli, Leslie. 2009. HIGHER! HIGHER! Cambridge, MA: Candlewick. ISBN 9780763632410 [Suggested Grade Levels PreK- 2]

REVIEW
This is a wonderful picture book for preschoolers. The text is just enough to support the illustrative pictures that really tell the tale. While the main character is swinging, asking her dad to push her ever higher, she goes so high in her imagination that she can see a giraffe in a zoo, kids on top of tall buildings, an explorer at the North Pole, an airliner and its passengers, the earth as seen from outer space, a monkey in a rocket, and finally an alien swinging just like she is! After giving each other a high five, her swinging subsides and she asks her father to push her “Again!”

The author creates a fun setting, where the book’s main character’s whole world is simply her swinging and her imagination. And her imagination has no limits!

CONNECTIONS
A great read-aloud book, and yet it still can be enjoyed for the illustrations alone. This will promote conversation about what is real and what is imagined.
