RODEO. Ill by Jan Sonnenmair. Honesdale,

REVIEW
Poetry, prose and photography combine in this unique
picture book that depicts a busy day at a Navajo rodeo. Each poem reveals the perspective of a
participant—from the anticipation of the night before in “Tomorrow” to the we’ll
get ‘em next time reflections of the final poem “Heading Home.” The poetry and
expository text on each double-page spread frequently are accompanied by the
authentic narration of a rodeo announcer and plentiful photographs of rodeo
participants engaging in mutton busting, barrel racing, steer wrestling, eating
fry bread and more. Back matter includes a page on rodeo history and a listing
of additional resources in print and on the web.
