Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas

Ottaviani, Jim. 2013. PRIMATES: THE FEARLESS SCIENCE OF JANE GOODALL, DIAN FOSSEY, AND BIRUTE GALDIKAS. Ill. by Maris Wicks. New York: First Second. ISBN 1596438657 [Suggested Grade Levels 4 - 13]

REVIEW
This is a compilation of three mostly-biographies in one graphic novel by librarian, Jim Ottaviani.  Ottaviani’s love of science shines through in this easy to read and very engaging story about Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas.  All three scientists are connected in this story to make a nicely flowing graphic novel that many ages would enjoy.

Maris Wicks’s illustrations are simple, but yet convey much of the story.  The primates’ expressions are priceless as well as the humans.  Wicks’s drawings and Ottaviani’s story telling combine well to make this a very enjoyable biographical-ish read.

CONNECTIONS
Discuss with students how life was different for these scientists living away from other humans and with primates.  Brainstorm difficult situations or triumphs from living like that.
