Hallowilloween: Nefarious Silliness

Brown, Calef. 2010. HALLOWILLOWEEN: NEFARIOUS SILLINESS. Boston: Houghton Mifflin. ISBN 9780547215402 [Suggested Grade Levels K-5]

REVIEW
This is classic Calef with his usual interplay of wordplay and artplay in this fun collection of poems perfect for Halloween and beyond. His clever use of point of view and relentless rhyme create irresistible poem portraits about mummies, witches, and “vumpires.” Stylized, full-color art creates the perfect stage for his poems, full of details kids will notice and enjoy. The fourteen poems that include “The Poltergeyser” and “The Vumpire,” for example, are full of puns and clever coining of words. Read these all aloud together; the humor is completely infectious.

CONNECTIONS
These poems lend themselves to participatory reading aloud, from rapping to chanting. In addition, young people will enjoy examining the illustrations closely for all the clever details Brown incorporates. He particularly enjoys creating poetic cartoon portraits and young readers may enjoy imitating his style to draw, paint, or cartoon their own portraits.
