Sunday is for God

McGowan, Michael. 2010. SUNDAY IS FOR GOD. Ill. by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher. New York: Random House. ISBN 9780375841880 [Suggested Grade Levels 1-4]

REVIEW
In a time when Sunday is just another day for many, this refreshing book depicts the sanctity of a weekly ritual as experienced by a young African American boy. Readers will smile at the boy’s dismay at wearing his itchy starched shirt, hurrying through breakfast, and fidgeting in the pew. Some will relate to his thoughts: “I’d like to have wings and fly away, out of the church, over the streets, down to the river” and “Does the Lord know what I’ve been thinking? Uh-oh.”

The story is interspersed with Bible scriptures and excerpts from hymns that synch nicely with the boy’s view of the service. The full-page illustrations feature acrylic paintings over collages of hymns and Bible pages. The technique provides readers with interesting things to spy beyond the text while adding an additional layer of reverence to the work. As evening approaches, the boy confirms for the reader, “Tomorrow it will be a regular day. But today is special...Sunday is for God.”
