REVIEW
Pete the Cat sings the praises of his favorite shirt and its “four
big, colorful, round, groovy buttons.” Even when the buttons pop off one by one,
Pete remains calm, stating “Buttons come and buttons go” while continuing to
sing.
PETE THE CAT AND HIS FOUR GROOVY BUTTONS is filled with fun
descriptive language like the adjectives used in describing his buttons. After
the loss of each, readers are asked “How many are left?” and are not only
encouraged and supplied with the answer, but able to view it in a mathematical
sentence (4 – 3 = 3).
Illustrations done in varying widths of pen and layered gouache
provide a childlike depiction of big eyed PETE THE CAT AND HIS FOUR GROOVY
BUTTONS.
